Multicast and Mobility Management in Heterogeneous Access Networks

In the near future it is foreseen that a Mobile Terminal will be equipped with network interfaces of different wireless technologies. The user is expected to be moving around and still have Internet connectivity, accessing his favourite services in a seamless way. However, VoIP and peer-to-peer traffic are flooding the current networks, and new emerging services, such as video streaming and videoconference are confirming this trend. The resort to multicast techniques is thus a foreseeable necessity to provide resource-efficient techniques for the network to provide mass-media entertainment streaming in an efficient way.

The project intends to define, develop and deploy a Wireless Access Network that supports multicast traffic in a mobility environment and manages network resources efficiently. The main objectives are:

  1. To propose, design and evaluate a signalling mechanism to manage multicast sessions over heterogeneous wireless networks;
  2. To propose and evaluate a mobility solution to provide seamless handover of multicast groups;
  3. To propose and evaluate resource management algorithms to support multicast groups over heterogeneous wireless technologies.
